its applications there are many types of

gears such as spur gears helical gears

bevel gears worm gears gear rack etc

let's see each gear type in details spur

gears a parallel and coplanar chef's

connected by gears are called spur gears

the arrangement is called spur gearing

spur gears have straight teeth and are

parallel to the axis of the gear spur

gears are the most common type of gears

the advantages of spur gears are their

simplicity in design economy of

manufacture and maintenance and absence

of end thrust they impose only radial

loads on the bearings spur gears are

known as slow speed gears if noise is

not a serious design problem spur gears

can be used at almost any speed

applications it is regularly used for

speed reduction or increase resolution

and accuracy enhancement for Positioning

Systems torque multiplication spur gears

are used in several mechanical

applications such as clocks electric

screwdrivers etc and in many household

appliances such as washing machines

blenders oscillating sprinklers clothes

dryers etc they are used in aircraft

engines and in railway trains where

noise is not an issue in addition they

are used in slow speed vehicles such as

bicycles spur gears are also suitable

for high torque low speed drives such as

kills ball mills and sugar mills trains

of spur gears are used in power stations

to convert wind or hydroelectric energy

into electrical energy helical gears

helical gears have their teeth inclined

to the axis of the shafts in the form of

a helix hence the name helical gears

these gears are usually thought of as

high-speed gears helical gears can take

higher loads than similarly-sized spur

gears the motion of helical gears is

smoother and

quieter than the motion of spur gears

single helical gears impose both radial

loads and thrust loads on their bearings

and so require the use of thrust

bearings the angle of the helix on both

meshing gears must be same in magnitude

but opposite in direction ie a right

hand pinion meshes with the left hand

gear applications they are preferred for

heavy load applications it is most

commonly used in transmission gearboxes

herringbone gear herringbone gears

resemble two helical gears that have

been placed side by side they are often

referred to as double helical gears in

the double helical gears arrangement the

thrusts are counterbalanced and so there

is no thrust loading or zero thrust on

the bearings it has advantage of

transmitting power smoothly because it

meshes two teeth at time they are mostly

used in heavy machinery x' bevel gears

tuned on parallel or intersecting but

coplanar chef's connected by gears are

called bevel gears it means both the

shaft axis are in same plane and

intersecting to each other these types

of gears are mostly commonly used in the

differentials drive of automobile bevel

gears are classified in different types

according to geometry straight bevel

gears have conical pitch surface and

teeth are straight and tapering towards

apex the bevel gears with spiral shaped

tooth are called spiral bevel or skew

gears spiral bevel gears are quieter and

can take up more load as compared to

straight bevel gears 0 bevel gears are

similar to straight bevel gears but

their teeth are curved lengthwise these

curved teeth of 0 bevel gears are

arranged in a manner that the effective

spiral angle is 0 hi poet bevel gears

are similar to the spiral bevel gear but

the pitch surface is hyperbolic and not

conical when to equal bevel gears having

equal teeth connect to chef's whose axes

are mutually perpendicular then the

bevel gears are known as miters

applications the bevel gear has many

diverse applications such as locomotives

marine applications

automobiles printing presses cooling

towers power plants steel plants railway

track inspection machines etc for

examples bevel gears are used in

differential drives which can transmit

power to two axles spinning at different

speeds such as those on a cornering

automobile bevel gears are used as the

main mechanism for a hand drill as the

handle of the drill is turned in a

vertical direction the bevel gears

change the rotation of the chuck to a

horizontal rotation the bevel gears in a

hand drill have the added advantage of

increasing the speed of rotation of the

chuck and this makes it possible to

drill a range of materials the gears in

a bevel gear planer permit minor

adjustment during assembly and allow for

some displacement due to deflection

under operating loads without

concentrating the load on the end of the

tooth spiral bevel gears are important

components on rotorcraft drive systems

these components are required to operate

at high speeds high loads and for a

large number of load cycles in this

application spiral bevel gears are used

to redirect the shaft from the

horizontal gas turbine engine to the

vertical rotor bevel gears are also used

as speed reducers worm gears worm gears

are used to transmit power at 90 degrees

and wear high reductions are required

the axis of worm gears shafts cross in

space the shafts of worm gears lie in

parallel planes and may be skewed at any

angle between zero and a right angle in

worm gears one gear has screw threads

due to this worm gears are quiet

vibration free and give a smooth output

worm gears and worm gear chefs are

almost invariably at right angles rack

and pinion iraq is a to that bar or rod

that can be thought of as a sector gear

with an infinitely large radius of

curvature torque can be converted to

an internal gear is one with the teeth

formed on the inner surface of a

very common in industrial application
